What is MAD Wholefoods?

"We are a bulk foods store that punches well above our weight, stocking over 500 different sustainable and local products in our 45 meters square store. MAD Wholefoods is about helping people Make A Difference - helping people use less plastic, eat less meat, reduce their carbon footprint and avoid food waste by shopping locally and sustainably."

How and why did you start MAD wholefoods?

"Thirty years in IT does strange things to a person and I had been looking for a change, but had no idea what. During a holiday in Byron Bay, however, my wife and I were inspired by a shop selling produce loose and package free, and we thought this was something that our community in Summer Hill needed.

Our mission is simply to make shopping for unpackaged food a convenient, fun experience that makes people feel good. We value community, and strive to serve it whenever and however we can. We seek to source as locally as possible, but when we can't, we aim to source from sustainable suppliers that give back to their own communities."

What makes MAD Wholefoods unique?

"We opened the very same week the country locked down, prompting a quick pivot to a contactless click and collect option on our website. When the Delta lockdown hit us in July '21, we introduced free local delivery for those in lockdown and continue this service today. We are always seeking ways of making this kind of shopping as convenient as possible (we introduced our drop and run service last year), and regularly introduce new cook at home 'kits' and recipes to make cooking or baking at home simple and fun. Our latest kit is an organic chocolate chip cookie mix! You can also find our gluten-free pancake, ANZAC biscuit and soup mix online, plus a Christmas fruit cake kit in time for the silly season. Last year we also introduced a range of hamper options; perfect for Christmas gifting."

What steps are MAD Wholefoods taking to be more sustainable?

"We are a package/plastic-free business, only selling pre-packaged products if they are in sustainable packaging (i.e. glass jars). We strive to source as locally as possible (about 3/4 of our product line is grown or made in Australia) to minimise our carbon footprint. Plastic packaging used in shipping is always cleaned and recycled. We are also a local hub for Terracycle's toothbrush recycling program, and use Terracycle for recycling packaging that is not kerbside appropriate."

"The glazes are so beautiful, and they make fantastic gifts for the eco-minded amongst us!"
